I hesitate to infer that fishing in the Bay is getting better by the day, but today was considerably better than yesterday. And comparatively speaking, yesterday was pretty damn good!

Inspired by fresh redfish fillets in the freezer for the first time since March, I sallied forth this AM to test the spinnerbait potential. Initially 200 yards of prime shoreline yielded nothing, so I reverted to popping a shrimp-tipped jig, and within 45 minutes or so had boxed my limit – most between 19 and 21 inches with one around two feet. Then I stowed the popping rod and began prospecting a spinnerbait again. And when the smoke had cleared and the dust settled an hour or so later, I had released five lovely ones and missed four others!

The Bay is still awfully grungy, but it is clearing. And I have every intention of speculating a “Golden Rule” the next time I make a sortie.

Got a badly needed positive attitude adjustment this AM. Took Durel’s oldest son to the Bay (Durel had to work.) where we limited on nice reds before 8:30. Most of the water was still like cafe au lait, but we found some that was almost decent up in the northwest corner, and that’s where they were. Might even try a spinnerbait there the next time I go, though it’s still a bit grungy for flies.

But it might not be for long!

Durel and I grabbed the day yesterday and headed to Theriot, where we caught around 100 specks!

Alright – we only kept 20, since the rest were a bit short. But we sure had a rod-bending day! Chased birds, mostly, for the smaller fish, then at about quitting time we found some really nice ones along a shoreline. Plastic-popping and tight-lining was the pattern, and Lake Mechant was the spot for most of the fish. It was a fun but VERY long day, and I still haven’t fully recovered from it. But I’m still able to do it, and that’s the important part.

Hope we get to do it again shortly!

Feeling like fly fishing for bass on Lake Martin would ease my withdrawal from saltwater a little, the first fish that hit my popper was a very nice bluegill! Foolishly I released it, then decided later that I’d see if I could catch a mess of them. NOT! But I did catch a few, along with four small to mediocre bass. However, I did get inspired to do a little “brim-bustin’” there once the upcoming weather settles a bit. They ought to be really active when it warms up again, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with whole-fried bluegills!
